ART

Art, which originates from the desire to create 'something beautiful', based on the conceptual recognition of beauty and ugliness, pleasure and displeasure, is a language, behavioral pattern and an entertainment that only unique to mankind. While animals communicate through their own linguistic systems, only humans utilize art as a medium, and in fact, the very ability to perceive beauty and ugliness is a blessing granted exclusively to humans as higher-thinking beings.

According to Wilhelm Worringer's argument in Abstraction and Empathy,  humans possess a fundamental psychological need for artistic expression, which gives rise to impulses of empathy and abstraction. Although the causes of these impulses and the methods of satisfying them differ, they have allowed human art to take on a more diverse range of styles and forms. Nature exists in the same state for both humans and animals, but only humans are capable of sublimating fear of nature or the existential happiness of living organisms into works of art.

Humans do not stop at simply creating works of art; they also enjoy, empathize with, and communicate through these works within their communities. Although art primarily served a religious purpose of enlightening humans from ancient times to the Middle Ages, it became more pleasurable following the Renaissance, and in modern times, it has evolved into an accessible form of play for everyone. With advancements in technology, creative activities that were once limited to painting and sculpture now manifest in more diverse forms. We are even in an era where artificial intelligence (AI) can study previously created human artworks and produce similar imitations. However, while AI can learn or piece together references to produce works, it cannot engage in philosophical reflection or creatively express such thoughts through art. AI may identify the origins and materials of a work, but it cannot appreciate, empathize with, or critique it—an ability unique to humans.

Countless species engage in group activities, but humans are the only ones who display "artistic" behavior. Despite the emergence of AI that can replicate and mass-produce human creations, only humans can create art through reflective thought and share it within their communities.

Thus, art is the most distinctive behavioral pattern that sets humans apart from savages and defines what it means to be "a human".

미와 추, 쾌와 불쾌라는 개념적 인식을 바탕으로 '아름다운 것'을 창조해 내려는 욕구로부터 시작된 예술은 인간만이 향유하는 행동양식이자 언어이며 놀이이다. 물론 동물도 각각의 언어적 체계로 소통하지만 예술이라는 수단을 이용하는 동물은 인간 뿐이며, 미와 추를 인식할 수 있는 것 자체가 고등 사고 동물인 인간에게만 허락된 축복이다.

보링거가 <추상과 감통> 에서 주장한 바에 따르면, 인간에게는 예술의욕이라는 근원적인 심리적 욕구가 존재하며, 이 때문에 인간은 감통충동과 추상충동을 느끼게 된다. 비록 두 충동의 원인과 이를 만족시키려 는 방법은 다르지만, 그로 인해 인간의 예술은 보다 다양한 양식과 형태를 띄게 되었다고 할 수 있다. 자연은 인간과 동물 모두에게 같은 상태로 존재하지만, 인간만이 자연에 대한 두려움이나 유기체의 존재적 행복의 감정을 예술작품으로 승화시킨다.

인간은 예술작품을 단순히 창조하는 것에서만 그치지 않고, 이를 공동체와 함께 향유하며 공감하고 소통한 다. 비록 고대부터 중세까지 예술은 주로 종교적으로 인간을 계몽하는 역할이었지만 르네상스 이후 예술은 보다 즐거워졌고 현대에 들어서 누구나 즐길 수 있는 놀이에 가까워졌다. 기술의 발전과 함께 회화와 조각으로 한정되었던 창조활동이 보다 다양한 양식으로 나타나게 되었고, 이제는 인공 지능이 이전에 창조되었던 인간의 예술작품을 학습해 비슷한 모사품을 만들어 내기까지 하는 시대가 도래하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 인공지능은 레퍼런스를 학습 -또는 짜깁기- 해 작업물을 만들어 낼 수는 있지만 철학적 사유에서 출발하여 이를 창조적으로 표현한 예술을 할 수는 없다. 인공지능은 이것이 어떤 이가 무엇을 사용해 만든 작품인지 구별할 수는 있지만 작품을 감상하며 사유하고 공감하거나 비판할 수는 없다. 이것이 바로 인간 고유의 영역인 것이다. 무리지어 활동하는 '종'은 수없이 많지만 '예술적인' 행동양식을 보이는 동물은 인간 뿐이고, 인간의 창조물을 모사하여 양산하는 인공지능이 속속 등장하고 있지만 사유를 통해 예술작품을 창조하고 이를 같은 종, 공동체와 향유하는 것은 인간 뿐이다.

이처럼 예술은 동물의 종에서 인간을 구별짓고, 인간을 인간답게' 하는 가장 큰 특징적 행동양식이라고 할 수 있다.
