Role and Identity as an artist

Art, enjoyed exclusively by humans as higher-thinking beings, holds an even more special meaning in modern society, where every moment feels like a battlefield. While animals communicate through their own unique linguistic systems, only humans use art as a means of expression. In the rapidly evolving era of the 4th and 5th industrial revolutions, where new technologies emerge almost daily, what can be said about the role and identity of artists?

From ancient times through the Middle Ages, art was primarily created for religious purposes. Works like the Venus of Willendorf, meant to invoke blessings of fertility, or paintings that illustrated biblical stories, served as propaganda for spreading the dominant ideology of the time: religion. However, after the Renaissance, art became centered on humanity, and the identity and role of the artist shifted to expressing human creativity through music, visual arts, and literature. While creativity can manifest in various fields such as science, mathematics, and sports, art—especially modern popular art—is distinct in its accessibility to all of humanity.

From the Renaissance to the pre-industrial era, art was more exclusive, limited to the few who created it and the select audience who appreciated it. However, with the technological advancements brought about by the Industrial Revolution, new mediums like photography and film emerged, making art accessible to the masses. Furthermore, the advent of computers and the internet gave rise to new genres, such as digital media art.

This progression of technology has blurred the definition and identity of the artist. Today, anyone can capture photos or videos on a smartphone and turn it into a profession. Social media platforms have made it easy for individuals to learn drawing or music and share their creations with the world. In a society where one can juggle "side gigs" and still label oneself as an artist on a social media profile, expressing unique creativity has become the defining feature of an artist's identity.

Of course, this democratization of art has its drawbacks, such as a perceived decline in the qualitative standards of popular art.

Thus, in modern society, the identity of the artist has become more ambiguous than ever, and their role seems to have returned to the most fundamental principle: the expression of humanity's unique creativity.

고등 사고 동물인 인간만이 향유하는 예술은 매분 매초가 전쟁인 현대 사회에서 그 의미가 더 특별하다. 동 물도 고유의 언어체계를 통해 소통하지만 예술이라는 수단으로 소통하는 동물은 인간 뿐이다. 하루가 머다 하고 새로운 기술이 등장하고 있는 4차, 5차 산업 사회 속에서 예술가의 역할과 정체성은 무엇이라고 할 수 있을까.

고대부터 중세까지의 예술은 주로 종교적인 목적으로 창조되었다. 다산의 축복을 빌기 위한 빌렌도르프의 비너스 상이나, 성서의 내용을 설명하는 그림들 처럼 당대를 지배하고 있던 주된 사상인 종교를 전파하는 프로파간다의 역할을 맡고 있었던 것이다. 하지만 르네상스 이후의 예술은 인간이 중심이 되었고, 인간만이 가지고 있는 창조성을 음악, 미술, 문학과 같은 방법으로 발현하는 것이 예술가의 정체성이자 역할이 되었다. 물론 인간이 창조성을 발현하는 방법에는 예술만이 아니라 과학, 수학, 체육 등 다양한 종류가 있지만 예술, 특히 현대 대중예술은 전 인류가 향유할 수 있다는 점에서 분명히 구별되는 점이 있다. 르네상스 시대부터 산업혁명 이전까지의 예술은 보다 폐쇄적이고 소수에게 한정되었다. 예술작품을 창조하는 예술가들과 이를 즐기는 소수의 선택받은 이들이 문화를 만들었다. 하지만 산업혁명 이후 기술의 발전과 함께 사진, 영상과 같은 다양한 매체들이 등장하였고, 이는 한정된 예술을 대중에게 허락하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 컴퓨터와 인터넷의 등장과 함께 디지털 미디어 아트라는 새로운 장르가 탄생하기도 하였다.

이처럼 기술의 발전은 예술가의 정의와 정체성을 이전보다는 흐릿하게 만들었다. 오늘날에는 누구나 스마트폰으로 사진과 영상을 찍어 직업을 삼기도 하고, SNS를 통해 누구나 쉽게 그림이나 음악을 배우거나 자 신의 작업물을 온 세상에 내 보일 수 있게 된 것이다. '투잡', '쓰리잡'을 병행하더라도, SNS 프로필을 예술가로 지정해 자신만이 가지고 있는 창의성을 보인다면 자신의 정체성을 예술가로 규정할 수 있는 세상이 된 것이다. 물론 이러한 사회적 상황은 대중예술이 질적인 면에서 이전보다 더 후퇴하였다는 부작용을 피 할 수 없을 것이다.

이처럼 현대 사회에서 예술가의 정체성은 그 어느때 보다 모호해 졌고, 그 역할 또한 가장 원초적인 '인간 고유의 창조성 발휘' 라는 것으로 돌아갔다고 사료된다.
